Mid-Columbia Economic Development District's 2017 annual Gorge Economic Symposium takes place Nov. 2 in Stevenson. This yearly, half-day event shares economic and employment trends at the regional and county level with presentations by Washington economist Scott Bailey and Oregon economist Dallas Fridley, covering Hood River, Wasco, Sherman, Klickitat and Skamania counties.

The Columbia Gorge Community College Medical Assisting Program just completed its 10th year. In that time, 136 students have graduated from the program.
Medical assisting is a one-year certificate where students will receive training which involves administrative and clinical aspects of health care in clinics and physicians' offices.

The quest for the next president of Columbia Gorge Community College entered a key phase this week with selection of a 17-member search committee by college board members Tuesday evening.
The volunteer committee represents various public sectors as well as college students, faculty and staff. Dr. Preston Pulliams, former president of Portland Community College and CEO of national search firm Gold Hill Associates, is conducting the search, beginning this week with open forums for the public and campus constituencies. Comments gathered in these events will identify important professional and personal characteristics to be included in the position announcement.

Columbia Gorge Community College board members this week formally opposed efforts by the White House to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, joining a national effort by the American Association of Community Colleges to encourage federal legislation allowing DACA recipients to pursue higher education in the United States.
College board members also urged the public to contact Members of Congress in support of DACA and enactment of the “Dream Act” or comparable legislation to safeguard those who arrived in the United States as children but who have not yet achieved citizenship.
