Introduces digital recording, sound design and elements of desk top multimedia production in an off-the-shelf software environment. Explores moving images, narrative text, independent research and sound animation. Includes the fundamentals of MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) as well as various industry standard media production tools, i.e. iMovie, Logic Pro and Cakewalk. Personal instruments are welcome in class. Prerequisite: WR 90 or equivalent placement test scores. Audit available.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Utilize computer based media tools for educational creative projects.
- Design sound through invention and sampling.
- Compile record and edit in multimedia domain.
- Develop original ideas in audio visual educational media.
- Gain familiarity with the audio visual industry past and present via products and online research.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
At the beginning of the course the instructor will present methods used to evaluate student progress and grading criteria. Methods may include examinations, quizzes, creative projects, class participation and pertinent art criticism.
Course Activities and Design
In class lecture in a computer work station environment. Hands on experience with musical instruments, recording equipment. In class presentations of media projects drawn from a variety of original and sourced materials combining music, text and images.
Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
- Utilize computer based media tools for educational creative projects from on line research to hard disk recording and editing.
- Design sound through live studio recording in the presence of the sound path from mic to mixer to data storage.
- Acquire a creative approach to working with diverse elements to a well-focused educational or artistic effect.
- Become familiar both aesthetically and technically with the multimedia industry.
