Introduces software, tools and techniques to design and create effective publications that combine text, graphics, illustrations, and/or photographs. Covers the processes to create, import, and manipulate text, graphics, and/or templates through software program tools and features. Includes practice in many of the following types of publications: announcements, fliers, newsletters, brochures, and/or web pages. Recommended: Placement into RD 115 and WR 115; prior knowledge and use of computer technology; CAS 121 or equivalent typing skills. Audit available.
Upon successful completion of this course, student will be able to:
- Research desktop publishing software and techniques used to design personal and/or business publications.
- Use desktop publishing software to create personal and/or business publications following current professional and/or industry standards.
- Use critical thinking skills to independently design and create publications.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
Assessment may include: Projects with original work could include flyer, brochure, poster, newsletter, and/or web page design. Journals, group discussions about design and design software, open ended assessments.

Activities may include: online readings and videos, class discussions, reflection writings, open ended assignments.

- Learn basics of desktop publishing software.
- Use and edit templates to create publications.
- Import graphics.
- Move, size, and crop graphics appropriately.
- Create and import text.
- Apply attributes of size and style to text to enhance documents.
- Use automatic features of software efficiently.
- Use color appropriately and effectively.
- Demonstrate proper file management techniques.
- Link publications with other software applications.
- Insert and format hyperlinks
- Use merge features to produce business documents
- Creating, editing, and using templates to produce publications
- Creating, importing, and manipulating graphics
- Creating and manipulating text
- Formatting paragraphs, tables, and lists
- Enhancing documents through special effects
- Using color effectively
- Importing and manipulating text and graphics from other sources
- Linking publications with other software applications
- Formatting documents using master pages
Students should be allowed to use desktop publishing software of their choice to finish their projects. Software could include MS Office Publisher or Word (any version), Open Office, Scribus, Google Docs, and/or Serif Page Plus, etc
