Career Description

The Renewable Energy Technology program provides a solid foundation in automated electronic technologies preparing students to work as technicians in a broad range of industries: wind, solar, hydropower, avionics manufacturing, food and beverage manufacturing, engineering, and others. Renewable energy and manufacturing technicians perform a variety of job duties: (1) operate and maintain equipment, (2) perform mechanical and electrical component repair to correct malfunctions following manufacturing requirements, (3) comply with project environmental health and safety programs, and (4) perform preventative maintenance in accordance with OEM maintenance manuals. Engineering technicians use electrical and electronic theory to design, build, repair, calibrate, and modify components, circuitry controls, and machinery.

Course of Study

The Associate of Applied Science degree provides a basic level of knowledge and skills in programmable logic controllers, industrial control systems, semiconductors, and higher levels of math and physics. Students must also meet Associate degree comprehensive requirements and Associate of Applied Science Degree requirements.

Students interested in transferring to Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT) may start their studies at Columbia Gorge Community College (CGCC). Upon completion of their AAS degree in RET, students can transfer to OIT and in two more years complete the Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Electronics Engineering Technology. Students interested in this option are recommended to meet with a CGCC academic advisor and an OIT advisor after their first year of study at CGCC.

Program Outcomes

Students who complete the AAS degree should be able to:

  1. Qualify for employment in the renewable energy field as technicians.
  2. Service/repair renewable energy systems and assist engineers with the design of renewable systems by applying knowledge of electrical, electronics, mechanical, control systems and hydraulics/pneumatics concepts.
  3. Communicate effectively both at the individual level and within team settings.
  4. Understand the impact of renewable energy within the context of sustainability and apply sustainability concepts to their practice.
  5. Apply ethical and professional practice within the field of renewable energy.
  6. Qualify for employment in the high tech field as electronic technicians.

Program Prerequisites

While the Renewable Energy Technology AAS is an open entry program, the following prerequisites are required for courses within the degree: MTH 65 with a "B" or better, WR 115, and RD 115.

This program prepares students for employment in renewable energy. This industry seeks employees with skills in electrical engineering, electronics, and mechanical engineering. The certificate of completion provides a basic level of knowledge in these areas and skills in computer applications, math, and writing. The Renewable Energy Technology certificate is related to the Renewable Energy Technology AAS degree, and, as such, all coursework in the certificate may be applied to completion of the AAS degree. Students must also meet general certificate requirements.

Sudents who receive a certificate of completion should be able to:

  1. Qualify for employment in the renewable energy field as entry-level operators.
  2. Assist technicians with repair/servicing/manufacturing of renewable energy systems by applying basic knowledge of electrical, electronics, mechanical, and hydraulics/pneumatics concepts.
