Welcome to the self-paced lab at Columbia Gorge Community College. You are taking an independent study course. This course is based on a 12 week term and the assignments are outlined below. If you follow the weekly schedule, you will successfully complete one half credit of high school health. You may work faster than the outline.

 

You will be studying 10 chapters of the text, Lifetime Health. Each chapter includes vocabulary, review questions, 1-2 projects and a test. Refer to the grading sheet on the web site for the break down of the coursework.

 

Week 1 Chapter 6 Physical Fitness pages 126-149

B.     Do an internet search to learn the stages of sleep. Do not look on any sites that end with .com. You must find a site with .org at the end of the site address. Describe the stages of sleep and include your source.

Choose a sexually transmitted (STD) infectious disease and write a one page report about the disease. Make sure to include the following:

        Scientific name

        History of the disease

        Type of pathogen

        Symptoms

        Mode of transmission

        Number of people who have the disease (in Oregon, US and world)

        Prevention

        Treatment

 

Good sources of information are your county health department (brochures are available), State of Oregons web site, the Center for Disease Control web site and the public library.

 

 

Week 9 Chapter 14 Lifestyle Diseases pages 340-358

Obesity is an epidemic in the United States. Create a visual presentation on a piece of poster board about the disease.

Important information to include: definition of the disease, causes, history, statistics using graphs and charts, news articles, pictures, effects on society. Please check with your instructor before starting the project.

  1. What organization published the pamphlet?
  2. Tell me three important facts from each pamphlet.  (Be sure you include the pamphlet.)
