Explores the higher level nursing roles found in critical care, end of life care, and discharge planning within hospital and community settings. Emphasizes the planning and delivery of individualized, holistic and more complex nursing care to seriously ill clients in the acute care area. Prerequisite: NUR 210.
Clinical: TB test results and current immunizations submitted before student is permitted in the clinical area. Current CPR certification is required. Focus is on nursing interventions for the unstable medical/surgical patient.
As Provider of Care: Analyze assessment data and apply established standards of nursing care in developing nursing care plans for the urgent/emergent client and clients at the end of life.
As Communicator: Apply therapeutic communication techniques with clients and families experiencing life threatening illnesses and at the end of life.
As Manager of Care: Deliver timely, prioritized and organized nursing care for a patient load totaling an acuity level of 3-4 patients.
As Member within Discipline of Nursing: Promote the patient’s right to be informed of, and participate in, healthcare decisions across various healthcare settings.
Outcome Assessment Strategies:
To be able to progress to NUR 212, the student must:
Theory: Receive a minimum of 75% on the TOTAL points for five summary exams, ACE experience write-ups and article summaries, and one final exam.
Skills Lab: Pass/No Pass- To receive a Pass, the student must satisfactorily complete all specified skills in the campus Skills Lab, and receive a 96% or better on the math test using the ProCalc on-line program.
Clinical: Pass/No Pass- to receive a Pass, the student must receive a satisfactory rating on one (1) Interactive worksheet (IW); satisfactory ratings on all Critical Elements of the Clinical Performance-Based Outcome Tools (PBO), and receive no unsatisfactory rating on any clinical performance-based outcome for the clinical experience; must participate in the simulation experiences; and, must receive a pass on all clinical written assignments.

Course Activities & Design:
Theory: The theory content of this course will be presented by means of lecture/discussion groups and group work.
Skills Lab: The campus lab experience may include video, computer-assisted instruction, lecture, demonstration and “hands-on” experience and review for the practice and development of skills used in nursing.
Clinical: The clinical practicum takes place in health-care and community-based sites in the Mid-Columbia region. Opportunities to practice skills learned in the campus lab experiences are provided in these settings. The student is expected to be present and on time for all clinical experiences.
The simulation practicum takes place on campus in the Nursing Simulation Center. Attendance at simulation experiences is mandatory. Any missed time is expected to be made up.
Conferences: Final conferences are scheduled with your Clinical Instructor. Additional conferences will be scheduled as necessary.
Independent Learning: Students will be required to complete learning activities outside of regularly scheduled class times. For example: Delmar Skills series on CD-Rom. Refer to the calendar for these assignments.

Access community health care resources to sustain continuity of patient care.
