Course Description:

Continues nursing curriculum and clinical practices of roles and responsibilities at the registered nurse level.  Provides opportunities to learn and apply the knowledge and skills necessary to implement care for complex acute care and psychiatric clients. Prerequisite: NUR 112 or admission into the Nursing Program by advanced placement.

Clinical:  TB test results and current immunizations submitted before student is permitted in the clinical area.  Current CPR certification is required.

Course Outcomes:

As Provider of Care:  Analyze assessment data and apply established standards of nursing care when developing nursing care plans for the psychiatric and complex acute care patient/client.

As Communicator:  Apply therapeutic communication techniques in delivering individualized patient care based on established standards.

As Manager of Care:  Deliver timely, prioritized and organized nursing care for a patient load totaling an acuity level of 2-3 patients.

As Member Within Discipline of Nursing:  Apply at a beginning level the professional responsibilities of the registered nurse as defined by the RN Scope of Practice.

Outcome Assessment Strategies:

To be able to progress to NUR 211, the student must in:

Theory:  Receive a minimum of 75% on the TOTAL points for five summary exams, one final exam, patient teaching and nutrition assignment, community based experience paper, and psychiatric article summary.

Skills Lab: Receive a Pass:   To receive a Pass, the student must satisfactorily complete all specified skills in the campus Skills Lab, and receive a 96% or better on the math test using the ProCalc online program.

 

Clinical: Receive a Pass:  To receive a Pass, the student must:

  • Receive a satisfactory rating on one (1) Med-Surg Interactive Worksheet (IW) and one (1) Psychiatric Interactive Worksheet.
  • Receive satisfactory ratings on all Critical Elements of the Clinical Performance-Based Outcome Tools (PBO).
  • Receive no unsatisfactory rating on any clinical performance-based outcome for the clinical experience.
  • Receive a pass on all written clinical assignments.
  • Complete Kaplan exams and remediation.

Course Activities & Design:

Theory: The theory content of this course will be presented by means of lecture/discussion groups, group work, hand-outs, Moodle, and audio-visual presentations.

Skills Lab: The campus lab experience will include video, computer-assisted instruction, demonstration and “hands-on” experience for the practice and development of skills used in nursing. Attendance at all Skills Lab events is mandatory.  Any missed time is expected to be made up.

Clinical: The clinical practicum takes place in health-care and community-based sites in the Mid-Columbia region.  Opportunities to practice skills learned in the campus lab experiences are provided in these settings.  The student is expected to be present, prepared, and on time for all clinical experiences.

  • The simulation practicum takes place on campus in the Nursing Simulation Center.  Attendance at simulation experiences is mandatory.  Any missed time is expected to be made up.

Conferences:  Final conferences are scheduled with your Clinical Instructor.  Additional conferences will be scheduled as necessary.

Independent Learning:  Students will be required to complete learning activities outside of regularly scheduled class times.  Refer to the calendar for these assignments.

  • Individualize nursing interventions to meet identified patient care needs.
  • Perform a core set of nursing skills with the addition of the following skills: intravenous piggybacks, patient controlled analgesia, total parenteral nutrition, intravenous therapy, chest tubes, focused assessment and central venous devices.
  • Prioritize and organize nursing care for a patient load totaling an acuity level of 2-3 patients.
  • Communicate therapeutically to support nurse/client interactions.
  • Teach health concepts and self-care skills to enable patients to enhance their well-being.
  • Demonstrate written communication skills to provide a synopsis of professional accomplishments for obtaining employment in nursing.
